TOPIC: THE ONLY DOOR

THEME SCRIPTURE: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.” — John 10:1

 

PREPARATORY QUESTION 

1. Are you trying to reach God through a way He never sanctioned?

 

 

 

Jesus opens this discourse with His signature double “verily,” and immediately draws a hard line between legitimate and illegitimate access. The image is a sheepfold —a walled enclosure with a single entrance. Shepherds and shepherd-helpers entered through the door, in full view, with authority. Anyone bypassing that door — climbing over the wall instead — exposed themselves as an intruder, regardless of how confident or skilled they appeared.

This wasn’t abstract imagery to His hearers. Thieves in that culture avoided the door because the door meant accountability — a gatekeeper, witnesses, legitimate authority. Climbing the wall was the method of someone who had no rightful claim to the sheep and no intention of being questioned.

A few verses later, Jesus makes the identification explicit: “I am the door” (v.9). This reframes the whole illustration. It’s not merely about proper procedure —it’s about Christ Himself being the only sanctioned access point to God, to salvation, to spiritual authority over His people. Every alternative —self-effort, other mediators, other religious systems, personal charisma — is climbing the wall. It may look like access. It is not.

 This truth remains timeless because every generation invents new ways to “climb over” — new philosophies, new leaders, new spiritual shortcuts that bypass Christ while claiming to reach the same destination. Jesus doesn’t call this a lesser path. He calls it theft.

Beloved, examine how you’re approaching God. Sincerity does not sanctify a wrong entrance. Only the door does.

Father, thank You for providing one clear way into Your presence — Jesus Christ. Forgive me for any reliance on alternative paths, however good they appear. Keep me walking through the door You have appointed, and give me courage to point others there too. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
