TOPIC: I AM THE ETERNAL ONE

THEME SCRIPTURE: "Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am." —John 8:58 

 

PREPARATORY QUESTION 

Do you relate to Jesus as merely a historical figure, or as the eternal "I AM" who exists outside time?

 

 

 

The double "verily" here carries the highest weight in this Gospel — and what follows is staggering. The Jews were disputing Jesus's authority, pointing to Abraham as their unshakeable reference point. Jesus responds with a grammatical anomaly that would have been unmistakable to His Jewish audience: "Before Abraham was, I am."

Notice what He did not say. He did not say "before Abraham was, I was" — which would simply claim pre-existence, that He existed before Abraham's birth. He said "I am" — present tense, timeless, unbroken. This is a direct echo of Exodus 3:14, where God reveals His name to Moses as "I AM THAT I AM." Jesus was not claiming to be older than Abraham. He was claiming to be the eternal, self-existent God who has no beginning.

The response confirms they understood exactly what He meant — they immediately picked up stones to kill Him for blasphemy. No one stones a man for merely claiming great age.

This is timeless truth because it settles, permanently, who Jesus is. He is not a prophet who came into existence at Bethlehem. He is not a wise teacher who emerged in history. He is the eternal God who stepped into time, wrapped Himself in flesh, and walked among the very patriarchs who awaited Him. Every generation must answer the same question the Jews faced that day: will you stone Him for this claim, or bow to it?

Father, I confess that Jesus Christ is the eternal I AM — without beginning, without end, unchanging across every generation. Forgive me for the times I've reduced Him to less than who He truly is. Draw my heart to worship Him rightly today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
