TOPIC: THE MOVEMENT YOU CANNOT UNDERSTAND
THEME SCRIPTURE: “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” — John 3:8
PREPARATORY QUESTION
- How easily do you sense the move of the Spirit, and how easily do you respond to?
Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus gets deeper. He shifts from explanation to illustration. The wind becomes His example— something real, observable, yet uncontrollable. You can hear it, feel it, see its effects, but you cannot direct it. It moves on its own terms.
**This is how Jesus describes life in the Spirit.**
We often prefer a faith that is structured and predictable; regimental and ritualized. We want clarity on outcomes, timing, and direction. We want to know where things are going before we commit to the process. But the Spirit does not operate within those expectations. His work is not random, but it is not manageable either.
You may recognize His movement in hindsight—a shift in your thinking, a conviction you did not manufacture, a change in desire that seemed to grow quietly over time. But in the moment, it often feels uncertain the destination.
This lack of control can be unsettling. It challenges the desire to stay in charge of your own growth and direction. Yet, trying to control what only the Spirit can produce leads to frustration.
Yeah, trying to want to control the move of the Spirit may end up forcing outcomes or resisting necessary change simply because it does not unfold the way you expected.
Jesus is not presenting uncertainty as a flaw— it is part of the nature of spiritual life. The evidence of the Spirit is not in your ability to predict Him, but in the reality of His work within you.
The question is whether you are willing to live with that tension. Can you trust God’s movement without needing to define it? Can you follow without having full visibility? This is the way of the Spirit-Man.
Key Takeaway
The Spirit’s work cannot be controlled, only recognized and followed. A spiritual man comfortably lives, not with a full picture of the future. But he trusts the Spirit enough to be comfortable responding.
The wind does not ask for permission to move. The Spirit does not either. But you can choose whether to resist or respond. Choose to respond.
Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD
- Where do you feel the need to control your spiritual growth or direction?
- How do you respond when God’s work feels uncertain or unclear?
- What might it look like to trust the Spirit’s movement more fully?
PRAYER
Lord, I admit my desire to control what I do not understand. Teach me to trust Your Spirit even when I cannot predict Your ways. Help me to recognize Your work in my life and respond with openness instead of resistance. Lead me where You will, and give me the courage to follow. In Jesus's precious name, Amen.
