TOPIC: STEPPING OUTSIDE THE COCOON
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2 (NIV)
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
1. How can we carry others' burdens when we have our own burdens to carry?
When life turns dark—when anxiety, loss, or discouragement closes in— our instinct is to retreat. We cocoon. We fold into ourselves, convinced that isolation will somehow shield us from deeper harm. But Scripture calls us not to isolation, but incarnation —to step out of ourselves and into the burdens of others.
It takes courage to open your heart while it’s still healing.
Hence, you will hear some Christians say, "I have not finished dealing with my problems, much more to that of others." But the law of Christ is not comfort; it’s love. And love—true, sacrificial love—requires movement toward, not away. Basil the Great, a 4th-century church father, challenged the early church with these words: “The bread in your cupboard belongs to the hungry; the coat in your wardrobe belongs to the naked.” In other words, what we withhold—time, comfort, presence, because we feel it is not enough even for us —may be the very thing God has given us to give away.
There is no shame in pain. Jesus wept. Jesus withdrew at times. But Jesus returned to the sick, the weary, the broken, and the cross. So must we.
Precious one, stepping outside of yourself doesn’t mean pretending everything is fine. It means allowing your woundedness to be a vessel for someone else’s healing. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote from a Nazi prison: “We must learn to regard people less in the light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer for others' sake.” That includes ourselves.
So beloved, take a step today. Speak a kind word. Write the message. Offer the prayer. Your pain may not disappear—but neither will your purpose wither.
Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD
1. Where have I built a cocoon around my heart?
2. What small, intentional step can I take today to carry someone else’s burden?
3. How might Christ be calling me to love even from the place I feel weakest?
PRAYER
Father, when I am weary, remind me that I am not alone. When I want to shut down, give me the courage to open up. Help me to carry the burdens of others, even as You carry mine. Use me—my weakness, my wounds, my waiting—for Your glory and the healing of those around me. Teach me to love like Jesus, not just in word, but in action. In Jesus' precious name. Amen
