TOPIC: SALVATION IS OF THE LORD

THEME SCRIPTURE: “But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.” – Jonah 2:9

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

  1. How did Jonah conclude that salvation is of the Lord?

It is interesting to state that man’s conception of God is different. We search for God, but we don’t find Him. This is because He has already found us. Hence, He makes Himself known to us. It is God who brings us to the place of hope, where we admit that we truly have no other hope but Him. When we have brought crisis upon ourselves, He reminds us that there’s no way of making it through without His intervention. And He never intervenes without allowing us to discover the gift of darkness and the death to self-will before resurrecting us from our tombs.

God is ahead of us, not behind us. We need to catch up, not Him. Glory to His name!

This awakening was what Jonah received by the time God was done with him. The prophet Jonah had to realize how sick he was before God healed his spiritual sickness. In his prayer and psalm, Jonah shares what he has learned in the depths of the sea. He came face-to-face with his self-willingness and unfaithfulness. We are often not different from the prophet Jonah. We are willing to serve God if only it favours us. We are prepared to do what God says only when it is convenient to us. Such loyalty is not true loyalty. It puts the self first, not God. Many times we have known the truth regarding the will of God in a tempting situation. We chose to go our way instead of His. We fail to recognize that we have become idols to ourselves. We only serve and are loyal to the 'self'.

But except a corn of wheat falls down and dies, it will abide alone. However, when it dies, the same corn produces many fruits (John 12:24).

It was the ‘new’ Jonah who confessed commitment to God by saying, "But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed…” (Jonah 2:9). When he came face to face with death, at a junction between life and death, he turned to God, and He heard him. The prophet’s conclusion was this: "Salvation is of the Lord."

Precious one, salvation truly is of the Lord. For there is salvation in no other.

There’s no name under heaven given among men whereby we should be saved except one—the name Jesus (Acts 4:12). No matter how critical or dire the situations of life are for you, salvation is of the Lord. You may be desperate and destitute, but your salvation is of the Lord. You may have taken the wrong turn in life, causing you to lose your peace. Your salvation is of the Lord. Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. So then, call unto Him, and He will answer you and show unto you great and mighty things which you do not know (Jer 33:3). Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:

  1. When you are hard-pressed, who do you turn to?
  2. When the going gets tough,

CONFESSION

Eternal Father, you are my very present help in times of need. You, who never sleeps or slumbers, are my sure help. When the going gets tough, it is you I look up to. In the midst of storms and the adversities of life, you will always be my peace, my strength, and my joy. Hallelujah!
