TOPIC: WHO IS THIS JESUS?
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And Herod said, John have I beheaded; but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see Him.” – Luke 9:9
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Who is Jesus to you?
John the Baptist was a firebrand. He brought the message of repentance to the people of his time. He was bold in declaring the divine message.
He rebuked authorities and corrected the naive. Herod the Tetrarch had his share of John’s rebuke and as a result, he [John] was imprisoned. Having beheaded John, it was expected that everything would return to normalcy. But not so. Herod began to hear of another person deemed to be a healer-teacher-prophet. He was healing the sick and raising the dead. His message was unique, drawing many to Him. Jesus’ disciples were also preaching throughout the towns, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere (Luke 9:6). Some were saying that John the Baptist had been resurrected to continue his ministry (Luke 9:7). Others were saying Elijah had returned to the earth in the person of Jesus. Some said He was one of the old prophets (Luke 9:8). Everybody had his own opinion. When King Herod heard of all that was done by Jesus, he was perplexed and he questioned, “Who is this, of whom I hear such things” (Luke 9:9)?
Beloved, who is this Jesus that after more than 2000 years, His name makes evil uncomfortable and His sayings transform the worst criminal?
Who is this Jesus that millions are in love with and by His name the sick continue to get healed. Who is this Jesus that too many books have been written about for centuries?
Precious one, Jesus is the true light who lights every man who comes into the world (John 1:9). John the Baptist was a burning and a shinning lamp (John 5:35) but Jesus is the shinning and the life-giving light (John 1:4).
No man can experience true life here on earth and after until he encounters and embraces Jesus.
Who is this Jesus? Jesus is the Son of God. Son of God does not refer to a male child of God. It is not the case that God the Father existed and after a while, He gave birth to a son. Son of God is a Greek phrase which means ‘God in human flesh’. Jesus is that part of the triune God who became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). He is God.
Who is Jesus? He is the self-existing, self-sufficient, self-dependent, uncaused, perfect One. He existed before time (John 8:58) and by Him, all things consist (Col 1:17).
He is the one we all ever need in this life.
Precious one, who is Jesus to you? You might have heard many things about Him from others but what are you saying? Is He your Savior, Lord and King? Is He your God and your all? If you do not know Jesus for yourself, beloved, you have picked your own pocket. After hearing so much about Jesus, Herod desired to see Him. Seek Him and as you seek to know Him, He will guide you in finding the what and the how for your life. Remain blessed.
