TOPIC: EXCUSES: I AM NOT ELOQUENT
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And Moses said unto the Lord, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since you had spoken unto your servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.” – Exodus 4:10
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Was Moses’ excuse of being slow to speak genuine?
As God’s people, it is beautiful and assuring to know that the God we walk with is the kind who declares the end from the beginning and from ancient times the things that are not yet done (Isa 46:10).
This suggests that before God came to Moses in the wilderness of Midian, He knew the end result of sending him to Egypt to deliver Israel. God knew and had all the success factors in place, waiting to bring Moses onboard. He was the last success factor, and yet Moses felt God had made a big mistake. How can a stammerer like him stand before Egypt’s king? To avoid any embarrassment, Moses expressed his fear to God: “O my Lord, I am not eloquent... I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue” (Exo 4:10).
When God showed up in Jeremiah’s room and told him, “Before I formed you in the belly, I knew you, and before you came forth out of the womb, I sanctified you, and I ordained you a prophet unto the nations” (Jer. 1:5). Do you know how young Jeremiah responded? “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child” (Jer 1:6). The idea of speaking the mind of God (especially when it is not favourable) before kings, presidents, and nobles can be daunting.
God is aware of this, and He knows it can be our excuse to avoid taking on a task that brings us before nobles. So this is what He did.
To Moses, the Lord asked him, “Who do you think made the human mouth,” (Exo 4:11) to use stammering as an excuse? So, God gave him Aaron (his senior brother) to be his linguist. Aaron was to hear Moses and say whatever Moses told him. With Jeremiah, God put forth his hand and touched his lips (Jer 1:9) and immediately how to speak as a prophet was installed into his spirit.
When it got to our turn, God gave us His Spirit, and Jesus instructed us: “When they bring you to the synagogue, or before the magistrates and powers, don’t worry about defending yourselves--what you’ll say or how you’ll say it. The right words will be given to you. The Holy Spirit will give you the right words in the same hour” (Luke 12:11-12).
The beauty of Christians having the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit is that He works within us, both to will and to do His good pleasure.
What to say and how to say it to produce the needed results will always be engineered within you. How can you say, ”I don’t know how to speak?” Just show up, and the Comforter (your advocate) will do what has to be done. So move beyond the excuse and move this mountain before you to the glory of God. Remain blessed

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:
- How confident are you when you declare or speak in Jesus’ name?
CONFESSION
Eternal Father who dwells in me, He works through me the things of God. I affirm that my words carry power because the greater one lives in me. In the name of Jesus, I speak and it comes to pass; I decree and it stays fast and I command and it is established. Glory Hallelujah!
