TOPIC: ESCAPE FROM SODOM
THEME SCRIPTURE: “For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil upon themselves.” – Isaiah 3:9
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What does Sodom stand for?
- Will God do again what He did to Sodom?
Sodom and Gomorrah are bywords, even today, in secular vocabulary. They stand for cities that became morally shameful. They were cities that God had to pour His judgment of fire on. Jesus used Sodom as a measuring line against cities that rejects the gospel (Matt 10:14-15) and also against Capernaum (Matt 11:23). What Jesus said was that "if the mighty works or miracles done in Capernaum had been done in Sodom, the city would have remained to this day” (Matt 11:23). Likewise, if the volumes of sermons on repentance preached in our days (on radios, TVs, online, devotionals, etc.) had been preached in Sodom, that city would’ve remained to this day, maybe.
It shall be more tolerable for Sodom than post-modern cities on that day.
The society of Sodom was a rich and fertile one. It was “well-watered everywhere, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt” (Gen 13:10). The prophet Ezekiel, describing Jerusalem’s moral state likened her to Sodom: "Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.” (Eze 16:49). The people of Sodom were at ease and pride had taken over their lives. They had no regard for God or man, moral reasoning or spirituality, but rather their sensual needs. Wrong had become right. Sodom was destroyed, never to be rebuilt again. Yet the name of this city remains to date. The reason is—"God turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly” (2 Peter 2:6).
God used Sodom to tell mankind that ungodly lives won’t go unpunished.
Precious one, it is the case throughout history that when men increase in riches and knowledge, pride becomes their bane. They then repudiate the principles of the God of all flesh. Pleasure becomes their god. They become inventors of evil (Rom 1:30). According to our theme scripture, we gravitate towards the state of Sodom when we no longer hide sin. From such, O child of God, flee. Escape out of Sodom with the help of God as did Lot and his family. “For the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men” (2 Peter 3:7).
How are we to escape Sodom? First turn over your life to Christ, if you’ve not done so. The life of godliness starts with God.
Without Him we can do nothing. Secondly, love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind and also love your neighbor as yourself (Matt 22:37-40). Thirdly, treat sacred that which is sacred. The things God chose for you are sacred, such as your parents, your skin color, ethnicity, race, life, sexuality, etc. And finally, take no pleasure in evil doers (Rom 1:32) but in the fear of God and compassion snatch them from the fire to come (Jude 1:22-23). God bless you more.
