TOPIC: THE BLESSED ONE
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.”– Psalm 1:1-2
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Who is a blessed man?
- How do you define being blessed?
Today, "blessed" means having everything one wants and having material possessions. This definition is tainted by sin and society's value of material possessions. We sometimes act against God's will because we think material wealth is a sign of blessing. It's troubling that our generation often uses deception to get material goods and then claims to be blessed.
The Psalmist defined "blessed" differently than we do today, looking at the theme scripture.
A blessed person "walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers," according to the Psalms' opening blessing. The Psalmist shows us how to be truly blessed by providing a model for Christians. He suggests that the Bible's "blessed" person avoids the foregone and receives God's favor. Heaven sees those who shun evil as blessed. He or she avoids bad advice from those whose intent is to sin and disobey God. He follows God's word in righteousness instead of evil counsel. He goes on to describe the blessed as one who doesn’t join himself in the company of sinners.
Sinful company will deter you from righteousness. Also, the blessed man avoids seats with mockers of God.
Beloved, we must know who we are in Christ Jesus and our calling to glorify God alone. God's word should guide our definition of a blessed person. This is not meant to promote laziness but to show the sure ways Christians can be blessed. We must follow God's word in our daily lives and avoid any advice that contradicts it. Daily, several sinful companies try to court us. Refusing to stand with them makes you blessed. We live in a generation where people mock God without provocation and say all kinds of things about Jesus, the Christ. Sitting with them is like participating in their sins.
Delighting in and meditating on God's word gives us the grace to walk the blessed path, brethren.
Today, resolve to never walk in the counsel of wicked men, avoid the company of sinners, and turn from anything that mocks your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Blessed are you!
