TOPIC: ETERNAL, COEXISTENT, YET GOD
THEME SCRIPTURE: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” – John 1:1
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Who is the Word?
Consider, Precious One, the power of words. Words can heal or harm. Words can inspire, demoralize, or unite. You are inspired to do more when you hear words like ‘You are wonderful’, ‘I love you’, or ‘You are the best’. However, words such as ‘You idiot’, ‘He’s dead’, or ‘You useless little thing’, have the power to tear down the confidence of a strong man.
Words have spirit, affecting our emotions, mental state, and spirits.
John meant more than words when he talked about the "Word." The Semitic root for “word” (which is dabar) means ‘thing’, ‘event’, ‘affair’, or ‘action’. A word spoken is a happening. Once it is uttered, an event has been evoked. The reason when God speaks, a creative moment occurs. Isn't it fascinating that God's Word created everything? That "light" appeared instantly when God said, "Let there be light." Isn’t it profound that before God does anything, He pictures it and speaks it out first? Then God said, “Let us make man in our own image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion…” (Gen 1:26). So God created man in His own image; in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them (Gen 1:27). Precious One, this "Word" or "Speech of the Father," as John Calvin will say, brought Abraham out of his father's house, kindred, and country (Gen 12:1). The "Speech of the Father" brought Israel to Egypt for 400 years (Gen 15:13).
This "Speech of the Father" became flesh and dwelt among us.
“In the beginning was the Word.” Is this ‘beginning’ the time of creation? The "Word"'s existence did not begin at creation, according to John the Apostle. He is revealing the time when the salvation plan was conceived, before time and the finite were created. Furthermore, this "Word" or "Speech of the Father" has never existed alone. “And the Word was with God.” "The Word was toward God" could be the literal translation. "The whole existence of the Word is oriented towards the Father," said Lloyd Ogilvie. This is why Jesus said, "...whatsoever He [the Father] does, these also doeth the Son likewise" (John 5:19).
"And the Word was God," meaning everything about God can be said about the Word. The “Word” partakes of the innermost being of God. Thus, John the Apostle stated, "The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him (John 1:18)."
Precious One, the "Word" who became flesh and dwelt among us, is divine.
Jesus is the "Speech of the Father" indwelling believers. "The Speech of the Father" is eternal, coexistent, and God. The Father is honored by those who honor the "Word." Stay with the "Word," meditate on Him, and live in Him, with Him, and for Him. God bless you more.
