TOPIC: LET GOD’S WORD BE YOUR COUNSEL

THEME SCRIPTURE: “Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counselors.” — Psalm 119:24

 

PREPARATORY QUESTION:

1. When making important decisions, whose counsel do I trust and follow most—the Word of God or my own understanding?

 

The psalmist describes God’s Word not only as a source of delight but also as counsel. This is significant because counsel speaks of guidance, especially when we need wisdom and clarity. Scripture is therefore not merely something to read or admire; it is something we must consult and follow.

Every day, many voices compete for our attention and influence our decisions—our experiences, emotions, culture, opinions, and personal preferences. Yet the psalmist chooses to give God’s Word the highest authority. He treats God’s testimonies as trusted counsellors, allowing them to shape his thoughts, choices, and actions.

This changes the way Scripture functions in our daily lives. It is not reserved for quiet reflection or Sunday worship; it becomes an active guide for everyday decisions. We measure our choices against God’s truth and seek His direction through His Word.

God is not silent. He continues to speak and guide us through Scripture. His Word is not outdated instruction but living wisdom for our present circumstances.When we engage with Scripture, we are listening to the God who still directs His people.

However, God’s counsel will not always confirm what we want. Sometimes His Word corrects our assumptions, challenges our preferences, or redirects our plans. Yet His wisdom sees beyond what we can see. Trusting His Word means valuing His perspective even when it differs from ours.

As we consistently seek God’s Word for direction, we develop discernment. We become better able to recognize what is true, what is pleasing to God, and what does not align with His will.

Lord, let Your Word be my counsel. Teach me to seek Your wisdom before relying on my own understanding or the opinions of others. Help me to trust Your guidance even when it challenges my preferences. Shape my decisions through Your truth and make me sensitive to Your voice as I walk each day. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
