TOPIC: THE POWER OF WORDS 

THEME SCRIPTURE:  "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."—Proverbs 18:21 

PREPARATORY QUESTION 

1. If someone recorded everything you said this week, would it build people up or wear them down?

We tend to think of sin in terms of dramatic failures — theft, violence, betrayal. Rarely do we count our words among them. Yet Scripture treats speech as one of the most consequential things we do, capable of both creation and destruction. God spoke the universe into being; we, made in his image, carry a fraction of that same power every time we open our mouths.

Think about how quickly a careless comment can undo years of trust. A sarcastic remark to a spouse. A dismissive word to a child. A gossiped detail that reshapes how someone is seen at work or church. None of these feel like "real" sin in the moment. They feel like venting, or honesty, or just talking. But James compares the tongue to a small spark capable of setting a forest ablaze — disproportionate damage from something that seemed insignificant.

The reverse is equally true. A well-timed word of encouragement can keep someone going through a season they were ready to quit. A genuine apology can repair what silence never would. A simple "I believe in you" can outlast the moment it was spoken and shape how a person sees themselves for years.

This is why Proverbs doesn't say words have influence — it says they have the power of life and death. That's not poetic exaggeration; it's a warning and an invitation. Every conversation is an opportunity to build or to tear down. There is no neutral speech.

Lord, set a guard over my mouth and keep watch over the door of my lips. Forgive me for the words I've spoken carelessly and the silence I've kept when I should have spoken up. Teach me to use my words the way you use yours — to build, to heal, and to give life. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
