TOPIC: PASSED FROM DEATH TO LIFE

THEME SCRIPTURE: "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life." —John 5:24

 

PREPARATORY QUESTION 

1. Are you still waiting to find out if you're saved, or you're sure of your salvation?

 

 

 

Again, Jesus doubles the "verily" — signaling a truth so foundational it cannot be softened or negotiated. This time the subject is assurance. Most people treat eternal life as a future hope, something confirmed only at death or judgment. Jesus flips that expectation entirely.

Look at the verb tenses. "Hath everlasting life" — present tense, not future. "Shall not come into condemnation" — a settled negation, not a possibility. "Is passed from death unto life" — already completed. Jesus is not describing a process still underway. He is describing a transfer that has already happened for those who hear and believe. 

This matters because many believers live in perpetual spiritual uncertainty, treating salvation like a probation period rather than a finished transaction. Jesus ties this certainty to two conditions only: hearing His word and believing on the Father who sent Him. Not perfection. Not accumulated merit. Not the absence of doubt or struggle. Simply hearing and believing.

The phrase "passed from death unto life" uses courtroom and resurrection language simultaneously. Legally, the verdict of condemnation has been lifted. Spiritually, a dead man has been made alive. Both realities are already true the moment faith is exercised — not earned progressively over a lifetime of good behavior.

This is timeless because human nature hasn't changed. We still default to earning what God has already given. Jesus corrects that instinct with the same force He used two thousand years ago.

PRAYER 

Father, thank You that eternal life is not a distant hope but a present reality for those who believe. Remove every trace of striving to earn what Christ has already secured. Root my confidence in Your finished work, not my performance. In Jesus' name, Amen.
