TOPIC: FOLLOWING FROM A DISTANCE
THEME SCRIPTURE: "And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it." — Joshua 3:3
PREPARATORY QUESTION
- Are you allowing God to lead clearly, or are you crowding His direction with your own assumptions?
As Israel prepared to move, they were given a specific instruction: follow the Ark of the Covenant—but keep a distance of about two thousand cubits. Do not come near it.
At first glance, this seems unusual. If the Ark represented God’s presence, why not stay as close as possible?
Because clarity requires perspective.
If the people crowded the Ark, only a few would see for themselves where it was going. Distance ensured that everyone could recognize the direction. It allowed the whole nation to move with confidence, not confusion.
There’s a principle here: when you rush ahead or cling too tightly to your own expectations, you can lose sight of God’s leading. What feels like closeness may actually become obstruction.
God was leading them into unfamiliar territory— “a way you have not passed before.” In such moments, precision matters. The people needed to watch carefully and move deliberately.
In your own life, following God is not about impulsive movement. It is about attentive alignment. Sometimes that means resisting the urge to act prematurely. Sometimes it means letting go of your need to control outcomes so you can clearly discern His direction.
Distance, in this sense, is not separation—it is reverence. It is the recognition that God sees what you do not. It creates space for trust.
Key Takeaway
Clear direction comes when you give God space to lead instead of rushing ahead of Him.
When you allow God to lead without interference, His direction becomes unmistakable. You begin to move not out of assumption, but out of clarity.
And God's clarity will change how you walk.
Remain blessed.

1. Where might you be rushing ahead instead of waiting for clear direction?
2. Are your expectations making it harder to discern God’s leading?
3. What would it look like to follow with greater attentiveness and trust?
PRAYER
Lord, help me to follow You with clarity and humility. Teach me to resist the urge to move ahead of Your direction. Give me the patience to watch, listen, and respond at the right time. Let my life reflect trust in Your wisdom, not reliance on my own understanding. Lead me in the way I should go. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
