TOPIC: TAKE WISE COUNSEL
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Listen now to me, and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you.” — Exodus 18:19
PREPARATORY QUESTION
- Moses was called by God and was being used BY God in a dramatic way. Why was it necessary for him to listen to his father-in- law?
After battles are fought and victories won, another challenge often appears— fatigue.
In Exodus 18, Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, observed something concerning. From morning until evening, Moses stood alone judging the people’s disputes. The line was long. The burden was heavy. The leader was exhausted.
Sometimes the greatest threat is not opposition—it is overload.
Jethro spoke honestly: “What you are doing is not good.” His counsel was practical and Spirit-sensitive. Appoint capable, trustworthy leaders over groups of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. Let them handle smaller matters. Bring only the difficult cases before God.
It was not a reduction of responsibility.
It was a redistribution of it.
Moses had the humility to listen.
Leadership rooted in pride isolates. Leadership rooted in wisdom invites structure, counsel, and partnership. God never intended His work to rest on one set of shoulders. Shared responsibility strengthens both the mission and the messenger.
Notice that Jethro’s advice included a priority: Moses was to represent the people before God and teach them His decrees. Prayer and instruction were central. Administration served the calling; it did not replace it.
There is a rhythm here for all of us:
Seek God’s direction.
Receive wise counsel.
Delegate what others can faithfully carry.
Focus on what God has specifically entrusted to you.
Burnout is not a badge of honor. It is often a sign that something needs reordering.
Key Takeaway
God often strengthens His work through shared wisdom and shared responsibility.
You were never meant to carry God's assignment alone.
Precious one, perhaps today God is inviting you, by this devotion, to release something you were never meant to carry alone. Perhaps He is sending wisdom through an unexpected voice. Would you humbly listen?
Remember: the question is not whether help is available for you. The question is whether you are ready to share the burden.
Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD.
- Where am I carrying more than I should alone?
- Have I been resistant to advice or shared responsibility?
- Who has God placed in my life to offer wise counsel?
- What might I need to release or delegate?
PRAYER
Father, guard me from pride that isolates. Give me humility to receive counsel and wisdom to structure my responsibilities well. Teach me to carry what You have assigned—and to release what You have not. Strengthen me through shared leadership and godly community. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
