TOPIC: STRENGTH TO 'STAY PUT'
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart..” — Galatians 6:9 NKJV
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Sometimes, rebuilding can be wearisome. How can the believer in Christ scale the huddle of weariness?
By the time the wall neared completion, Nehemiah faced his most subtle and dangerous wave of opposition. Sanballat and Geshem invited him to distraction— “Come, let us meet together.” When that failed, they attempted intimidation through false accusations. When that failed, they attempted manipulation through a hired prophet, urging Nehemiah to hide in the temple. Every tactic served one purpose: to stop the work.
Nehemiah’s response became a model for every believer called to long-term obedience: discern, refuse, and continue.
Nehemiah's famous reply still echoes with holy resolve: “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down.” The greatness of the work was not in its fame but in its faithfulness. Nehemiah kept his hands free of distraction so he could keep them filled with God’s assignment.
Discernment became his shield. He recognized that not every invitation is an opportunity; some are traps in disguise.
Evagrius Ponticus, a desert father skilled in spiritual warfare, taught: “To be ignorant of the enemy’s schemes is to open the door for him.”
Nehemiah refused to open that door. He filtered every voice through the fear of God, not the fear of men.
Exhausted yet steadfast, Nehemiah prayed one of the simplest and most powerful prayers in Scripture: “Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.”
He did not ask for escape or applause but for endurance. This prayer is the cry of all builders, intercessors, and servants who feel the weight of the assignment. Strength comes to those who stay on the wall; who 'stay put'. And then, in just fifty-two days, the walls of Jerusalem were finished—and even Nehemiah’s enemies “perceived that this work was done by our God.”
The completion of the work turned opposition into recognition. God’s faithfulness became undeniable.
Precious one, you may be nearing a breakthrough, but distraction, accusation, or discouragement tries to pull you down. Resist. But how?
- Identify the Distractions— What “invitations” are trying to pull you off the wall? Fear? Criticism? Write them down.
- Practice Holy Refusal — Say a firm, prayerful 'no' to anything that dilutes your assignment.
- Pray Nehemiah’s Prayer— “Lord, continue to strengthen my hands” throughout the assignment.
- Ground Yourself in Truth— Counter accusations or lies with Scripture.
- Recommit — Dedicate the next step of the work to God, however small.
Beloved, remember that the greatness of your work is measured not by visibility but by obedience. Galatians 6:9 encourages us: "Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”
Remain blessed.
