TOPIC: COMMITMENT TO GOD’S PRINCIPLES
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher upon her shoulder.”– Genesis 24:16
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- How was it that Rebekah, with such beauty had kept herself all these years?
Life is full of decisions and every day, thousands of decisions are made by each one of us before we go to bed. We are where we are in life by reason of our choices and decisions.
Most often, our decisions are based on norms, general opinions, guesses and experiences. Little of our decisions are based on principles. However, where there is a commitment to principle, decision making becomes easier. For instance, if you have to make an investment decision, and already your principle is that you will never invest in environmentally degrading ventures, your options will be narrowed to a few. This will definitely make it easy for you to choose. If so, let's then ask, "Which principle or whose principle are we talking about here?"
Abraham had committed himself to God’s word and His principle. He understood that God is raising a new generation out of him. Therefore God instructed him to come out of his country and kindred and also his father’s house. This is separation. Being committed, he warned his servant never to bring his son Isaac back to the land where God called him out (Gen 24:6). He also warned his eldest servant never to take a wife from among the Canaanites for Isaac. Abraham understood the principle of separation. In the New Testament, God has set forth for the child of God to never be unequally yoked with unbelievers (2 Cor 6:14).Today you can find Christians who are not committed to God’s principles. They are not separated from the world and worldly things.
Beloved, if you are such, “…Come out from among them, and be separated, says the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you” (2 Cor 6:17).
Not only was Abraham committed to God’s principle but also Rebekah. When it was time for her to get married, such a beautiful lady was still a virgin (no man had known her or slept with her). This description seems to be rare to find among God’s people today—young Christians who are yet to marry and are chaste. Rebekah was committed to chastity. Today young men and women, married men and women also, are struggling with their commitment to chastity because our world ridicules those who keep themselves pure and applaud the sexually immoral.
Precious one, Jesus left us spiritual principles to help us make the right decisions at all times.
He reminded Peter, “…he that draws the sword, by the sword he shall perish” (Matt 26:52). To us all He said, “A new commandment [precept, an authoritative prescription, an injunction] I give unto you that you love one another; as I have loved you, so also love one another” (John 13:34). A precept is a principle, law, rule, or edict. We are to make our choices and decisions based on this commandment or principle. Beloved, be conscious of God’s precepts; be committed to them because the one who keeps His principles or precepts is he who loves Jesus (John 14:21). Thus, our love for Jesus is revealed in your commitment to His principles. From today going forward it shall be said of you—he lives in, and by the principles of God. Remain blessed.
