TOPIC: IS GOD ABLE

THEME SCRIPTURE: “Ah, Lord God, behold, you have made the heaven and the earth by your great power and stretched out arm, and there’s nothing too hard for you.”– Jeremiah 32:17

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

  1. Why do we doubt God’s ability and His word to us such that we get afraid in certain instances?

When angels entered the house of Abraham, he was courteous enough to be hospitable to them. Sitting at meal, these angels asked, “Where’s Sarah your wife?” Abraham replied, “Here in the tent” (Gen 18:9). Then the Lord said, “I will certainly return unto you according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah your wife shall have a son” (Gen 18:10). Sarah, who was in the tent heard it and laughed within herself and wondered, “Now that I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?” (Gen 18:12). Though biologically Sarah made sense—she was deep in her menopausal years. Yet God had one question for her, “Is anything too hard for the Lord…?” (Gen 18:14).

Precious one, when God asks a question, He doesn’t need the answer; we need the answer.

In the tenth year of King Zedekiah, Jerusalem was besieged by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. At this time, the prophet Jeremiah was shut up in the court of the prison which was in the king of Judah’s house (Jer 32:2). The king of Judah was not happy with the prophet’s prophesies. Jeremiah kept prophesying that Judah will fall to Babylon (Jer 32:3), Zedekiah will be captured by Nebuchadnezzar (Jer 32:4) and no matter how fierce Judah fights back the Babylonians, she will lose totally (Jer 32:5) because the thing is of the Lord.  These prophesied were discouraging and Zedekiah was not interested in the truth but rather anything pleasant to manage his fears.

Whiles in prison, with all the guards present, the word of the Lord bypassed all and came to Jeremiah saying,

Behold, Hanameel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you saying, ‘Buy my field which is in Anathoth, for the right of redemption is yours to buy’” (Jer 32:7). In obedience to God’s word, Jeremiah had gotten into many troubles with the leaders of Judah. How is he going to treat this word from God? The day came when Hanameel visited Jeremiah in the court of the prison and made him the offer exactly as the word of God had indicated.  Immediately Jeremiah recognized that the offer was of the Lord. Jeremiah, did not waste time to purchase the land (Jer 32:10-11). But the question still remains, “Who, in his right senses, will buy land at a time that war is about to break out?” Was it not this same Jeremiah who had prophesied that the land will fall to the Babylonians?

Having received the documents of purchase, Jeremiah handed them to his faithful friend and recorder, Baruch, charging him, in the presence of witnesses, to put the documents in an earthen vessel so that they may last for many days (Jer 32:13-14). The reason was that God had said that amid His judgment which He’s pouring out on Judah, His love will emerge to bring His people back to their land. Such that, “Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land” (Jer 32:15). Jeremiah is making an investment in God’s word; he took a stand on God’s promise.

It may not happen in his days but Jeremiah was sure God will do what He’s said, and the title deeds kept in the earthen vessel will be proof that God’s word is true.

After Baruch had taken the land titles from the hand of Jeremiah, the prophet burst into prayer. He declared, “Ah, Lord God, behold, you have made the heaven and the earth by your great power and stretched out arm, and there’s nothing too hard for you” (Jer 32:17).

Beloved, is anything too hard for the Lord? Not at all—for there’s nothing too hard or impossible to Him. Wherever you find yourself today, and wherever you’re believing God to take you to, remember that He’s able. Just trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding or the many contrary evidences. Has He said it and will He not do it? Has He spoken and shall He not make it good? Trust His word, and God will do exceedingly abundantly above all you can think or imagine. Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:

  1. Does it seem like God has said something concerning your life and for some time now you can’t see it coming to pass?
  2. What does it mean to trust God?

PRAYER

Precious Father, I affirm with all my heart that there is nothing too hard for you. Are you not the maker of the heavens and the earth and all that is in it? Though I do not see it  I trust that you are working out your word in my life. Glory to God!
