TOPIC: TO WHOM SHALL WE GO?
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”– John 6:68-69
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Why are you following Christ Jesus?
- Do you know who Jesus Christ is?
In our contemporary world, various elements compete for our attention and commitment, diverting us from a steadfast commitment to Jesus. Many negative voices and events attempt to draw us away from Christ. Within the body of Christ, occurrences have led to offenses, causing individuals to lose interest in the things of God and or Christianity as a whole.
A significant number have distanced themselves from Christianity due to the intricate challenges of life and offenses within Christian circles.
In the background to our text today, we are told of the miraculous feeding of the five thousand with five loaves of bread and two fishes (John 6:1-15), and the account of Jesus’ walk on water (John 6:16-21). Jesus then tells the crowd He is the Bread of Life and how important it is for them not to focus on physical bread but Him. Going on to explain what it means for them to eat of His flesh and drink of His blood, we are told that many were offended, and “…many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him (John 6:6).”
Jesus, turning to His twelve disciples asked “Do you want to go away as well (John 6:67)?” Surprisingly, these twelve disciples were not in any way offended by Jesus’ words and therefore found no reason to turn their backs on Him. Our theme for today is Peter’s response to Jesus’ question with a question “Lord, to whom shall we go?” This response reflects several considerations of that time; they could have departed based on their emotions, much like those who left, or they might have chosen to follow the spiritual leaders of their era, or they could have left to pursue prevailing philosophies, and so forth. None of the things in the world could deter them from following their Master, Jesus Christ.
They saw nothing more valuable to the words of eternal life CHrist alone gives.
The twelve disciples chose to follow Jesus because they believed that He has the “words of eternal life” and they knew that Jesus is “the Holy One of God (in other words, the Messiah – the Savior of the world).” What a profound reason to affirm one’s commitment and allegiance to Christ Jesus! The twelve disciples recognized that there are many gurus, religious and political leaders, philosophers and astrologers but none has words of eternal life. Their brief encounter with Jesus Christ had revealed to them that He is the only source of eternal life; He is the only way back to God.
Dearly beloved in Christ Jesus, as we begin the year with Jesus Christ, the Alpha and Omega; we must be conscious not to allow anything to take our focus from Christ Jesus. We must resolve to be fully committed to the things of God this year. In all situation and under every circumstance, look to Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith. Persevere in your walk of faith; don't allow the cares of this world, the deceitfullness of riches and the negative voices of Satan and his followers to derail us from our devotion to Christ Jesus. There is no Savior in the world but Jesus Christ. There is no source of eternal life for mankind but Him whom the Father has testified of. He has so much grace to reconcile us to God the Father. Be resolute, and live by these convictions throughout your journey this year. God bless you.
