TOPIC: TO GOD’S GLORY ALONE
THEME SCRIPTURE: “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” – Romans 11:36
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What is the chief end of man?
One of the most distinctive attributes of God is His emphasis on His jealousy, as noted in passages such as Exodus 20:5 and Deuteronomy 5:9. In Exodus 34:14, God underscores this attribute, stating, "…for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God." This name or attribute of God has generated considerable debate among humans (how can God be jealous?). However, it is essential to note that this jealousy is God's prerogative, and without it, He cannot fully be God. A closer examination of the passages in which He describes Himself as jealous reveals that His jealousy is fundamentally rooted in safeguarding His glory and ensuring that He shares it with no other. Throughout Biblical history, any individual or nation that attempts to assign respect, worship, or honor to another god, or shares God's glory with another, experiences the full displeasure of God.
The Protestant Reformation sought to establish that in matters of Salvation, man has no part to play and that it is God who works everything out for His Glory alone (Soli Deo Gloria).
Thus, we are justified before God through the authority and teaching from the scriptures alone, by grace alone, in Christ alone, through faith alone, for the glory of God alone.
In Romans, Paul diligently expounds on the doctrines of the Church in Rome in chapters 1 to 11. After this elaborate and precise theological foundation, he transitions to the application of these teachings. In the final verse of Romans 11, Paul concludes with an ecstatic doxology, affirming, "For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be eternal glory. Amen." He here establishes that God is the source or origin of all things (from Him); nothing in this world falls outside God. Everything you can ever imagine, including the salvation of the redeemed has its source in God. He also affirms that nothing happens outside of God (through Him). God sovereignly works out everything that ever happens through His power. Ultimately, Paul tells us the overarching reason for all these is this: for His glory.
Dearly beloved in Christ Jesus, the reason why you live, move, and have your being is to glorify God forever; that is your chief end.
Anything you engage in to divert glory to another is out of the will of God. In the finer details of our lives, Paul encourages us to even eat and drink to the glory of God (1 Cor 10:31). Will you from today, make the glory of God your preoccupation in all your endeavors and be conscious to ensure that whatever you do will be for God’s glory alone? Soli Deo Gloria
