TOPIC: LIFE’S MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS-PT1

THEME SCRIPTURE: “So they said to him, ‘Who are you?’ Jesus said to them, ‘just what I have been telling you from the beginning.” – John 8:25

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

  1. Why will the Jews question Jesus about who he is?
  2. What are people looking for when they ask- “Who are you”?

There is a joke that says two friends got lost and, in their frustration, approached a decorated soldier. They asked him, “Please can you tell us where we are, sir?” Not amused by the question, the officer replied, “Do you know who I am?” One of the guys then said, “O mine, we don’t know where we are and this guy also seems not to know who he is. We are done!”. In life, there are five most important questions that confront every person in the passage of their lives. Consciously or unconsciously, we have all answered these questions.

Whether we are aware of our answers or not, or whether our answers make sense or not, these questions continue to influence how we live our lives day by day.

These existential questions are: Who Am I (the question of true identity), Where Am I From (the question of true origin), Why Am I Here (The question of true purpose), What Can I Do (The question of true potential) and Where Am I Going (the question of true destiny). God, knowing that we do not have answers to these questions, has given us His Word to help us answer these questions because your answers will determine how you live. Beloved, who are you? The Jews asked Jesus this same question. You might have been asked this same question during a confrontation. But truth be told—our riches, academic credentials, skin color, nationality, what we wear or eat, etc. do not truly define our identity.

It takes the man who does not know his true identity to settle for false ones.

Beloved, it was God who created us. Who did He create us to be? “And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion…” (Gen 1:26). We were created to carry the identity or image of God (just as a shoe with Nike’s logo bears the reputation, goodwill, and pride of the company) and to be heirs of God’s creation. When man fell, it became necessary for God to send us Jesus, His Son. He, has God appointed as heir of all things (Heb 1:2). He is the brightness of God’s glory and the express image of His person (Heb 1:3). It is this Jesus who can restore the true image of man and our dominion lost in the Fall. How, you may ask? The more you behold Jesus, the more you are changed into His image. As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so was the Son of Man lifted up (John 3:14) so that whosoever will look to Him shall live. Then, those who now live, “We all, with unveiled faces, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord'' (2 Cor 3:18). This is remarkable.

Beloved, you have no true identity until you lift up your eyes towards Jesus and continue to look to Him.

What money ascribes to you or what society confers on you is nothing. What God has placed on you is your true identity. Walk in your true identity and you will stop chasing false ones. Step into your true identity and you would have stepped into the God-kind. God bless you more.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:

  1. Where have you been drawing your identity from all this while?
  2. How would you answer if someone asks you today—who are you?

CONFESSION

Precious Father, thank you for reminding me of who I am. I am not ordinary. I affirm this day that in Christ Jesus I have become God’s poetry, a chosen generation and a royal priest of God. Thank God, I know who I am.
