TOPIC: BEHOLDING JESUS

THEME SCRIPTURE: “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Your law.” – Psalms 119:18

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

  1. What does it mean for your eyes to be opened?
  2. Why should we read the Holy Scriptures daily?

Jesus spent forty days revealing himself and confirming his resurrection to over five hundred disciples. On the road to Emmaus, Cleopas and another unnamed disciple were deep in discussions about Jesus, his death, and his resurrection (Luke 24:13). They didn't notice Jesus as He joined them midway through their journey.

Two passionate people were discussing Jesus but failed to recognize him when he was right there with them.

The two disciples' unfortunate experience shows us the importance of relying on the Holy Spirit to reveal the God of the Scriptures to us. Beloved in Christ, understanding the Bible correctly is crucial to Christian maturity and growth. Misinterpreting Scripture leads to misapplying it and stunted growth.

In the practice of the Christian discipline of Bible studies, understanding the word of God is crucial.

"Open my eyes to behold wondrous things out of your law" (Psalm 119:18) was the Psalmist's prayer to understand God's law. Because holy scriptures are both letter and spirit. The letters kill but it is the Spirit that gives life (2 Cor 3:6). The letters are the doorway to the truth contained therein. To reach the Scriptures' truth, one needs the Spirit. Hence, the passionate prayer of the Psalmist.

All scriptures are inspired, and Jesus is the central theme of them all (John 5:39).

We cannot see Jesus or understand God's Holy Spirit-inspired word on our own.  So in his letter to the Ephesians, Paul prayed that their eyes would be opened to the hope of their calling (Eph 1:18). Also, the Bible says the Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth or enlighten us about God's word.

It came to pass, while eating dinner with Cleopas and the unnamed disciple, that Jesus blessed and broke the bread. Instantly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him (Luke 24:30-31). Brethren, the holy scriptures contain wondrous things that we must find. The holy scriptures contain both wisdom and power. Scripture contains righteous instructions and corrections (2 Tim 3:16). Psalm 119:11 says God's word in your heart keeps you from sinning. Therefore, even if some Scripture passages are hard to understand, we should keep searching and leaning on the Spirit until His light shines through.

As you resolve to be diligent in the study of God’s word, the Lord, through the Holy Spirit, will help you. He will enlighten you to behold Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith. Amen

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:

  1. How consistent are you with studying God’s word?
  2. And how are you eager to understand the depths of scripture?

CONFESSION

Dear Lord Jesus, help me by your Holy Spirit to be enlightened whenever I study your word. Let every veil be torn and let every darkness depart so I get a proper understanding to your word to behold you in the scriptures in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
