TOPIC: GOD’S CHILD, WALK PROPERLY
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarrelling and jealousy.” – Romans 13:13
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Have you been set free from the tyrannical rule of satan to indulge in sin?
Paul, in his encouragement to the Corinthian Church, urged them to prioritize glorifying God with their lives.
He admonished, “All things are lawful, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful but not all things build up” (1 Cor 10:17). A Christian Libertine can be described as a Christian who appears to lack a strong moral compass, displays a limited sense of responsibility, exhibits a lack of sexual restraint, and deliberately chooses not to adhere to conventional Christian behavioural norms. This concept initially emerged in Acts 6:9, referring to Christian slaves who were no longer bound by servitude but is more recently applied to Christians showing a lack of moral restraint.
In our text for today, Paul admonished the Romans, but also all believers, to cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
He provides a guide: Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarrelling and jealousy” (Romans 13:13). Unsure of why Paul mentions the manifestation of each act of sin first. It takes a drunken person who has lost all control to engage in orgies; it takes the person who indulges in the sensuality of the day to practice sexual immorality and it takes a jealous person to easily stir up strife. Paul, here labels these as works of darkness that are mostly done in the night or in hiding. Thus, if people who live in darkness are even ashamed to be identified with these vices, how much more Christians who are called to glorify God with their lives? It is inappropriate for Christians to identify themselves with these, Paul charges.
Dearly beloved in Christ, there is nothing like Christianity with no restraints.
It is not proper for a Christian to get drunk and partake in orgies. It is unacceptable to bury oneself in the sensuality of our days to be involved in all kinds of sexual impurities. There should never be an occasion to harbor jealousy in your heart to strive with your neighbor.
The next time you show up at a social event, whether for Christians or all kinds of people, stay away from drunkenness which can lead you to other vices. Also, beloved, the proliferation of nudity and pornography, which can so easily be accessed on phones requires that we are extra careful not to fall into the sin of sexual immorality. Don’t forget that where genuine love for one’s neighbor exists, there will be no occasion for jealousy so walk in love towards your neighbor. In your desire to glorify God, O Christian friend, pursue the things that will build you and not the ones that will destroy your Christian testimony. God bless you!
